The Scion Group was selected by Southern Methodist University (SMU) to perform a student housing market and demand analysis and inform the University’s housing plans. In order to learn more about SMU to perform the study, Scion used a variety of investigative and information gathering tools. Specifically, the Scion team toured the residential facilities, examined financial operating data, reviewed enrollment data, conducted student focus group and whiteboard sessions, interviewed University stakeholders, examined the off-campus rental housing market, and reviewed student housing options at the institutions with which SMU competes for student enrollment.

From the data gathered, Scion developed several observations that reflect on the demand for both upper division student housing (UDH), graduate student housing, and housing for students with families. They also offer some considerations for future planning.

Southern Methodist University, a nationally-ranked private university, is home to nearly 12,000 students from all 50 states and 96 countries.
