The housing market it tight — even if you’re still a college student in Orangeburg. That’s why leadership at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg will be offering eligible juniors and seniors a $1,000 incentive to live off-campus.

SC State is in the process of renovating and constructing new on-campus residence halls, but, in the meantime, acknowledges there is a shortage of student housing available. The administration is expecting 3,300 students this fall, the majority of which would prefer to live on campus or in university-affiliated housing. It has capped the size of the freshman class and a waitlist for housing is in effect as the university’s Housing Foundation has a total of 2,220 beds leased — 1,361 on-campus, and 859 in off-campus facilities.

In order to try and compensate for the lack of accommodations, SC State will offer up to 150 students a one-time $1000 incentive to secure their own off-campus housing in the community.
