Founded more than 135 years ago, the University of Manitoba is a research-intensive university offering over 90 degrees, diplomas, and certificates, including professional disciplines such as medicine, law, and engineering. The University community of 29,000 students and 8,500 faculty and staff stimulates over $1.8 billion in economic activity in the province. The University of Manitoba is a leader in the knowledge economy, with groundbreaking research in areas such as nanotechnology, functional foods and nutraceuticals, HIV/AIDS, and climate change.
Scion served as a member of a team led by Cibinel Architects, a Winnipeg firm selected to develop a master plan for the University’s health sciences campus. Working with the University and Cibinel, Scion assessed the housing demand and preferences of the existing and planned Bannatyne campus student population. The study focused on how to meet students’ residence needs on a campus experiencing significant enrollment growth. Scion’s work included conducting interviews with key stakeholders, facilitating focus group sessions, and implementing online student surveys. Scion also researched and analyzed enrollment and occupancy data and studied the off campus student rental market.
Following the completion of a student housing market study for the Bannatyne campus, Scion was invited to return to the University to complete a residence demand study for the Fort Garry campus (main campus).
